Can Jim the homeowner design a masonry fireplace in his existing house?

What would you accept for plan review? Cad drawing, crayon, charcoal sketch, floor plan, section, details, elevations????

Can Jim the homeowner build a masonry fireplace in his existing house?

Would extra inspections be required during the building of the fireplace? Hand holding?

Does Jims' design meet the prescriptive requirements of the Res Code for a masonry fireplace?

Does the (local) Res Code require a seal/signature for a masonry fireplace?

What do you consider 'extra' inspections? I would imagine there would be at least three or four required inspections...

Does Jim like it when his hand is held?

I was only asked at the counter what I would require. The person told me that her husband wanted to build a masonry fireplace. I told her I wanted a ledgible set of drawings and that it would be wise to contact someone familiar with design and construction of a masonry fireplace.

People ask me to do design work all the time.

Once a fellow came to me (in my former((job eliminated)) place) and said, "I'm gonna build a 'blup', how are you gonna make me do it?"

All I could do was not laugh in his face.

I actually did laugh in a dishonest realtor/developer's face once, and got reprimanded.

It was the local gubmint body's "non-jocularity" policy.

some hand holding... like a hearth inspection... maybe a flue inspection..

of course, I'm a 3rd party provider and will charge everytime I go there..

For a jurisdiction, if they don't know what they are doing, throw a stop work order up and require a competent mason be hired.
