For those of you who need continuing education credits for your job, I have a few questions:

a) When you take a class offering continuing education credits, is the class typically offered for free, or do you pay a fee?

b) Are ICC continuing education credits acceptable for your jurisdiction, or does each course have to be registered with the state?

c) Would you consider taking an online course that offered continuing education credits, or does the class need to be face-to-face?

a) Both

b) ICC is not the only game in town it depends, NFPA training and course content training approved by the state are acceptable.

c) Online and testable is becoming more and more acceptable and again course content is the key.

Door Guru Lori,

Obtaining CEU's / LU's / PDH's / other is becoming more easily

obtainable online......Free is always the optimal choice [ IMO ].

A lot of code officials / industry related professionals simply

do not have the time or resources to travel anywhere to obtain

Cont. Education......As for me, I try to obtain as much FREE

online training as I can.......The courses / webinars do not

have to be ICC related, but rather from accredited sources

[ i.e. - manufacturers, ...testing organizations, ...AIA

related, ...other, ...etc. ].

Travel budgets for training have shrunk to almost nothing,

except to the privileged.

Here are some links to some FREE & Not Free online training:

a) sometimes the your get what you pay for and some times you wish you hadn't paid

b) my jurisdiction (state) has to approve the credentials of the credits, they will even give credits for attend meeting if the meeting subject is germain to the job, ICC has accepted all my local credit to my Building Commissioner certification no problem and the ICC classes all have been accepted by Massachusetts

c) online has to be accepted by Massachusetts and if it does not have a procedure to verify participation it should not be accepted.

A proper venue, and accommodation are important to the learning experience. depending on the length snacks, breaks, or a meal with peer to peer discussion as all ways helpful.

Any training is good even for field I am not credential in, if the class is good it away has some use in the future.

Pay the meal ticket and the Feds pick up the rest of the tab

Great courses , check out the management series

Great for building inspectors also!!!!!

Application period open now till 12/15

a) When you take a class offering continuing education credits, is the class typically offered for free, or do you pay a fee?

Both, CO Chapter has training every other month, typically it is free. They also host an week long Ed Institute in March in Denver, daily classes including meal, $75, uber inexpensive.

b) Are ICC continuing education credits acceptable for your jurisdiction, or does each course have to be registered with the state?

State does not regulate the building code, but the Plumbing and Electrical Boards acknowledge ICC training.

c) Would you consider taking an online course that offered continuing education credits, or does the class need to be face-to-face?

I would do online, I think face to face you are forced to interact more.

Here in the great state of NC the state must approve both the course and instructor. There will be a fee for the class and with the contractors board at least 4 of the required 8 hours is required in a classroom.

People who have a Standard Certificate as well as a contracting license can get credit for both at the same time.
