Teton County commissioners will likely adopt new building codes Monday that will bring the county’s building regulations in line with the state’s.
Last updated in 2006, the standards under consideration will require greater energy efficiency in new homes.
The county is forbidden to have less-rigorous standards than the state. It must meet or exceed the state codes or forfeit its ability to regulate buildings.
Along with the 2012 International Building Code that Wyoming adopted in February 2012, the county is likely to add an updated energy code the state did not adopt, said Tony Ostoja, Teton County’s building official.
Adopting the energy code is called for by policies written into the county’s 2012 comprehensive plan, Ostoja said.
Although the greater energy efficiency mandated by the energy code could cost more initially than what the previous code required, Ostoja said it is the one provision of the suite of new regulations that could save homeowners money in the long run.
Commissioners will consider the new code at their regularly scheduled voucher meeting beginning 8:30 a.m. in the county chambers.
