Day Care Occupancy Question

A Day Care center is planning an expansion. The designers prefer the occupancy to be an "E", see BCNYS (ICC) 305.2.

Does the above section intend that the entire facility, including areas for children under 2 1/2 years, be "E"?

I see the ocupant load for an "E" is greater then a "B".

Depends on the number of kids.....Watch out for I-4 also....

308.5.2 Child care facility.

A facility that provides supervision and personal care on less than a 24-hour basis for more than five children 2½ years of age or less shall be classified as Group I-4.

Exception: A child day care facility that provides care for more than five but no more than 100 children 2½ years or less of age, when the rooms where such children are cared for are located on the level of exit discharge and each of these child care rooms has an exit door directly to the exterior, shall be classified as Group E.

"""""""""""see BCNYS (ICC) 305.2""""""""

hay Mac do you have a link or can you post the above section??

normally the enitre facility carries a "E", unless attached to some other occupancy.

"""I see the ocupant load for an "E" is greater then a "B"."""

day care 35 business 100

the little rug children do not need so much area, and they do not have a fancy desk to set at, which takes alittle more room

BCNYS 305.2 Day care. The use of a building or structure, or portion thereof, for educational, supervision or personal care services for more than five children older than 2 1/2 years of age, shall be classified as a Group E occupancy.

308.5.2 Child care facility. A facility that provides supervision and personal care on less than a 24-hour basis for more than five children 21/2 years of age or less shall be classified as Group I-4.

I was tauhgt that most day cares were "B"... Wrong maybe? The 1004 occupant load chart has "Day Care" at 35 sq ft per, and "E" educationnal at 20 sq ft per.

Exception: A child day care facility that provides care for more than five but no more than 100 children 21/2 years or less of age, when the rooms where such children are cared for are located on the level of exit discharge and each of these child care rooms has an exit door directly to the exterior, shall be classified as Group E.

Too confusing, too many directions.

More than 5 under 2.5.....I4....if there is egress from each room where the "toddlers" are they can end up back to E....Ohhhhh....and there are also ways to keep them IRC....

R-3 Residential occupancies where the occupants are primarily permanent in nature and not classified as R-1, R-2, R-4 or I and where buildings do not contain more than two dwelling units as applicable in Section 101.2, or adult and child care facilities that provide accommodations for five or fewer persons of any age for less than 24 hours. Adult and child care facilities that are within a single-family home are permitted to comply with the International Residential Code in accordance with Section 101.2.

Hay Mac,

Not in the office, but thinking back to the U codes even then thinking they were E's

Now in maybe a health club or similar could possibly be a B or something else, because not full blown day care
