Would most of you classify a dental surgical center as a "B" occupancy (outpatient clinic) since there is no overnight stay, or an I-2 because they are put under for the surgical procedure and during that time they are "incapable of self preservation"?

Most dentists use methods that do not render one incapable of self preservation. We asked a new dental office being built what they do. I would advise you to do the same. Pretty interesting stuff. Ours ended up as a "B".

You might find out what kind of surgical proceedures they are doing. I had one recently that was only doing "sedation dentistry". They were a B, because by definition, they were still capable of self preservation. I believe the definition came from NFPA 99.

In your OP, you mentioned that they are not capable of self preservation.

Coug, Where does the 5 or less come from? Is that an amendment in your state? I'm in the '09 IBC.

Definitely not I-2. I-2 requires 24 hour stay. There can be an unlimited amount of people totally knocked out, and as long as they do not stay 24 hours it is still a B.

If you are under 2009 IBC, it would fall under the Ambulatory Health Care provisions of 422.

Oh my! I see Glennman's point. The 2009 also changed the definition of I-2 (308.3). 5 people and 24 hours was in the 2006 IBC. So now any facility that renders people incapable of self preservation is BOTH an I-2 AND a B with an Ambulatory Health Care chaser.

Gotta love progress.

That's correct Dr.J. I recently attended a code update class, and this was made very clear. If the person is knocked out at all, sprinklers, and all kinds of other things are required.
