Distance to traps

Sorry, screwed up that last post a little bit. I am talking specifically about the distance to the traps, far exceeding 24".

You're referring to Section P3201.6 in the 2006 IRC? Also, what is your

area design Winter Temperature? (RE: Section P3001.2 )?

.

3201.6 irc and 1002.1 ipc ('06) both state that the maximum vertical distance to atral shall not exceed 24", horizontal not to exceed 30". ialso ask 'em what color is the cover of the 2006 ipc. doe in the headlights. hahaha ( not funny when the contractor/plumber doesn't know what color the cover of the code book is. lets me know they sure don't know what's in it.

Winter design temp is 14. But I before judgement is passed on me, you should know we don't have a plumbing code. In a former job, years ago I was a probationary plumbing inspector, probably going to go get the ICC cert soon just to have it. Anyway I am not permitted to say boo about plumbing, I just watch and learn. All of the areas around me do have plumbing so what I can't figure out is if the plumbers do it differently in this jurisdiction only or if they aren't being called on it elsewhwere. Or if I am wrong. The most common things I see are unprotected traps (pic), too great a distance from drain inlet to trap(pic), no primer or not purple primer(pic), s-traps, 1" tail pieces and drains on lavatories. One question I have is the blue primer (rain or shine?) instead of the purple primer. Is it listed/approved instead of purple primer?

I am sure there is a listing on it.....but my code says purple primer.......my chainsaw is listed....but it doesn't glue pipe well.....

705.8.2 Solvent cementing.

Joint surfaces shall be clean and free from moisture. A purple primer that conforms to ASTM F 656 shall be applied. Solvent cement not purple in color and conforming to ASTM D 2564, CSA B137.3, CSA B181.2 or CSA B182.1 shall be applied to all joint surfaces.

2011 code book 705.8.2no color is listed just A primer that conforms to ASTM F656 shall be applied

Yea, I called it a primer, what I meant to ask was is it approved without the primer as indicated.

2012 code 705.8.2 does say purple. I don't have a 2011.

705.8.2 Solvent cementing. Joint surfaces shall be clean

and free from moisture. A purple primer that conforms to

ASTM F 656 shall be applied.

wow...i don't know how you make it through a day of inspections out there. you must go through one of those red rubber stress balls on a daily basis if you see that all the time.

If your jurisdiction does not have a plumbing code then I would say yes, the plumbers can use the product. Bulletpoint below from the manufacturer.

•No primer needed on non-pressure DWV, up through 6” diameter where local codes permit.

Actually I don't stress over the plumbing or mechanical at all. I am not allowed to say anything about non complying items. I get to use what I see for my own education, learn from it either way. I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination compared to most plumbing or HVAC contractors so I take advantage of the fact that I am afforded the ability to talk to the contractors in a less confrontational manner since they know I can't tag anything. Of course, my BS meter gets a work out and some things just puzzle the crap out me. Usually when I ask why something may be done a certain way it boils down to cheaper/quicker/easier. It is funny when a contractor knows he is doing less than code and he knows I know it, but what are you gonna do?
