Do you accept legacy reports for a skylight?

I'm doing a remodel on my own house, and I ordered a skylight from one of the biggest manufacturers (V***X). I went to pull permits, and the plan checker told me I could not install it because they had not renewed their ICC report, and they only had their legacy report. Further, neither had virtually any other manufacturer - - the only current ICC skylight approvals were actually for solar tubes and for Acralight (a monumental commercial skylight manufacturer).

Any suggestions?

Yes we did.

I would think you could provide them with a "copy" of the manufacturer's installation instructions. You must be in California. I've never seen a permit request for a skylight in someones home.

We had the same thing with awnings. Seems to update the report costs losts of $$$ and most don't want to spend the money. Wonder why it's all about the money?

We do accept if at all possible even to the point of calling the manufactrure and getting additional infomation if necessary.

If the legacy report references the applicable adopted code reference, why wouldn't it be allowed?
That got me thinking (I know it's scary) I doubt any of the ES reports will reference the 2009 codes. So a product is reviewed under a specific code edition (2006) and then a new code cycle comes thru does that mean all the reports are useless when using a 2009 code?

Talk to the BO, and city attorney.

They can’t require an ICC report. It is one of the tools for use, but not the only one.

Also contact the Manufacture, the local rep will help.

"They can’t require an ICC report. It is one of the tools for use, but not the only one." Exactly, but you may have to do some footwork to satisfy them.

Hope the links work and it's the ones you need;

ACI acceptance report; http://www.architecturaltesting.com/certification/Download.aspx?DocID=152&CN=cnCodeCompliance

Based on ICC Criteria; http://www.icc-es.org/criteria/pdf_files/ac16.pdf

This might be the one submitted that's no longer list on ICC; http://www.veluxsolutions.com/inet/FAQS.nsf/All+FAQs/2419FDCB1FF12A0185256B5F006C0BB3/$FILE/NER216.pdf?openelement

Probably your best bet; Code compliance information can be found within the specification, or by contacting VELUX at 800-888-3589 or by visiting www.VELUXusa.com

not every product gets an ICC-ES report.. don't rely soley on them.

As with all new products, the code says "install according to the manufacturer's recommendations".. technology and building products change alot more frequently than every 3 years.

OK, here's the latest. The manufacturer said that per CBC/IBC 2405.5, unit skylights no longer require an ICC evaluation report. They only require an AAMA/WDMA/CSA label of compliance.

I guess that would explain why no manufacturer of unit skylights has bothered to renew their evaluation report.

And yes, UB, I'm in California...
