Does adjacent stove/range trigger 36" alcove?

ADAS/CBC 11B-804.3.1 and 804.6.5 requires a worksurface with a forward approach per ADAS/11B-305 be located next to a stove/range with an oven.
11B-305 says the clear width of the knee and toe clearance must be 30" minimum. This jumps up to 36" wide when the roll-under depth is greater than 24" deep per 305.7.1.

Q1: I have a range that is about 28" deep, which is 4" more than the 24" trigger in 305.7.1. does this mean I now need a 36" wide roll-under workspace instead of 30"?

Q2: Follow-up question: CBC 11B-306.2.3 only requires the knee and clearance to extend 19" minimum under the worksurface. If it only needs to go 19" deep, then canI declare the alcove to only be 19" deep + 4 range depth = 23" deep?

Q1: Nope, both sides would need to be >24" deep to trigger the 36" wide clearance. If just one side is >24" deep but the other side is <24" deep, then 30" wide clear width minimum is the requirement. CBC may not be that specific, but Access Board is, and I agree with their diagrams for this:


Q2: Maybe? I'd argue that you're meeting the minimum code requirements, so adding extra shouldn't be required, but maybe 11B-306.2.1 / 11B-306.3.1 could force you to include more. "Space under an element between 9 inches (229 mm) and 27 inches (686 mm) above the finish floor or ground shall be considered knee clearance... (11B-306.3.1)"

I can see someone reading this and saying "you have knee clearance beyond the minimum required, so that space has to be included (up to 25" deep)." Again, I'd argue against that and say you're fine, but that's just me. I've only had an issue once with showing minimum clearances for knee / toe depth. (Edit: however deep you show the knee/toe clearance is how deep the alcove is relative to the wall or fixture to the side - see where they measure to in the diagram above).

So as a hypothetical, if I built a worksurface like how I've modified Fig 11B-305.7.1 below, I'd be OK?
And if "yes, it's OK", that's because only the alcove's right side with the refrigerator (but not both sides) is greater than 24" depth?

I'd say that design complies with code.
Yes, this would be okay since one side does not exceed 24" in depth.
