Each wall will have their own rated opening/door as required below
A single 3 hour wall requires two independent 2 hour wall assemblies with 90 minute opening protection in each wall.

A single 2 hour wall requires two independent 1 hour wall assemblies with 60 minute opening protection in each wall.

That is how it was explained in class last week

Each wall will have their own rated opening/door as required below
A single 3 hour fire wall (equivalent?) requires two independent 2 hour wall assemblies with 90 minute opening protection in each wall.

A single 2 hour fire wall (equivalent?) requires two independent 1 hour wall assemblies with 60 minute opening protection in each wall.

Hope you don't mind MT, but that hurt my head to read and maybe this makes it clearer?

The way I understand this is that they are required to provide a 2-hr FW, and are using the double fire wall option/alternate. Each wall in the double fire wall is required to be 1-hr, but they provide 3-hr. To tackle the opening issue, they propose a separately constructed single fire wall in a "portal" frame within the double fire wall assembly, independent of each of the double walls, and then provide the single opening required by the IBC. RLGA wrote an article about this "special" (Using that word in the same context that someone from Texas might) configuration that helps me understand it...maybe they did too. In any case, the CBO will make his decision.
