I live off-grid. I recently made the stupid decision to opt into a Facebook group for DIY solar.
It seems a staggering number of totally unaware people (as in, they have no idea what watts/volts/amps are all about) are wiring stuff, and some are even trying to go grid-tie.

Are there U.S. jurisdictions where electrical wiring doesn't need to be done by a qualified Sparky?

True -- but only for owners doing their own wiring in their own homes. "Flippers," for example, technically aren't allowed to do wiring in houses they're fixing up for resale. Of course, they always claim they're going to live in it ...

They make that claim when they get the permit. The for sale sign at the final inspection says otherwise. We wouldn’t do anything about so I ignore it. I once raised the question with a woman that owned a duplex that had a fire in one side. She was taking out an owner builder permit and I asked her if she lived there. That upset her and she said,”What is there about me that would make you think that I could live there.”

Where are the insurance companies?

Some of the wiring pics I've seen on that facebook group are ... appalling.

It's the same in some provinces here in Canada. I ran into a guy who moved here from Ontario who was trying to wire his own house one time (which you can do in Ontario).

Almost everything needed to be replaced once the electrical inspector and electrician got ahold of the building.

Your photos make so much more sense then. If the baseline is a clueless homeowner, a slightly less clueless contractor is always going to look better.
