California Building Code Chapter 1133B.7.1 says that exterior paths-of-travel (walks and sidewalks) must be minimum 48" wide, with an exception for natural barriers and other exisitng conditions.

Are there other typical exceptions for handrails and minor trim?

I have a walking space that is exactly 48" between brick planters (the planters are 2' tall). We'd like to put a coping cap on the planters, but the cap overhang would take out at least another inch on each side of the walk. will this be a problem?

Sorry, I am not familiar with CBCC, but I will make a comment to bump it up the list and hopefully someone who is will get to you. Good luck.
