Exit passageway use

We have an R-2 dorm, two stories at 2,192 sqft per floor. Each floor is a double loaded hall with sleeping rooms and shared baths for both men/women with exit stairs at each end. Because of the per square foot occupant load for a dorm (50 sqft per) the load is 44 per floor, and since we are trying to not have sprinklers in the building this hallway is not permitted to be a corridor. My question is can the hallway be classified as an exit passageway? I think this would prohibit a janitors closet or storage off the exit passageway (or the required drinking fountain?), but all the rooms we are proposing off of the hall are occupied spaces, so my reading was yes. Unless I'm miss reading the restrictions for uses of an exit passageway, any clarification would help.

As long as it is code compliant. The dorm will be used for religious retreats and we are trying to navigate a very tight budget.

Second

What code are you under? Unless there is something locally an R-2 has to be sprinklered regardless of who the occupants might be.

Ditto, Welcome to the Forum.

As stated above an R-2is going to be sprinklered under the unamended code.

ahh, thanks for the heads up. Upon further review looks like I missed 903.2.7 Group R. Well better to find out now.
