2015 IBC, Is the electrical motor control equipment for stair pressurization allowed in the stairwell?

I recall there may have been a code statement that nothing should be located in the exit stairwell, which I would use to keep soda machines, cleaning equipment and the like out of the exit stairwell, any citation for this would be appreciated, including fire code or NFPA 1

I have cited section 1011.6 stairway landing for the encroachment.

If it serves egress, it is generally allowed....Just like the lights...The debate would be if it is necessary to be THERE....

1023.5 Penetrations

Penetrations into or through interior exit stairways and ramps are prohibited except for the following:
  1. Equipment and ductwork necessary for independent ventilation or pressurization.
The necessary in that section has to do with the operation of the equipment. Obviously the controls are necessary for the operation of the equipment. Equally obvious is that the controls could theoretically be located elsewhere however, being necessary for the operation of the equipment would allow the controls to be located in the stairwell. If there are over-current devices, the control can't be located above a stair tread.

It would have to be in a room with the same fire rating as the stair if it isn't in the stair enclosure, or else a fire could take out the controller and shut down the pressurization prematurely.

909.20.7.1 Ventilation Systems

Assembly
Smokeproof enclosure ventilation systems shall be independent of other building ventilation systems. The equipment, control wiring, power wiring and ductwork shall comply with one of the following:
  1. Equipment, control wiring, power wiring and ductwork shall be located exterior to the building and directly connected to the smokeproof enclosure or connected to the smokeproof enclosure by ductwork enclosed by not less than 2-hour fire barriers constructed in accordance with Section 707 or horizontal assemblies constructed in accordance with Section 711, or both.
  2. Equipment, control wiring, power wiring and ductwork shall be located within the smokeproof enclosure with intake or exhaust directly from and to the outside or through ductwork enclosed by not less than 2-hour fire barriers constructed in accordance with Section 707 or horizontal assemblies constructed in accordance with Section 711, or both.

Ice to the right is part of the top landing at least 4x4 feet that is dead space in the stairwell perfect for the controls
