I'm currently designing an medical clinic in a strip mall lease space. Their room requirements for the clinic make me use every square foot where possible. My question is Can a emergency exit be through a personal office space? The current design has multiple offices along the rear of the clinic with a corridor to one of the exterior doors. I would like to close this corridor to gain an office space. There are multiple doors along the rear exterior that can be used but currently space requirements puts them in offices.

Ok as long as there is no lock on the egress side of the office door, and exit signs, everything else required for egress and accessibility complies with code.

This is possible in theory, but in practice I have seen very few offices where a clear exit path of the width required by code is maintained at all times. Heaven help somebody who had to go through my office to escape!

Thanks for the replies. Yes its an outpatient clinic. I agree it meets code, just not sure the city will go for it. Paul, I wonder if the space was an exam room? They're generally quite open. I may have to refer this to the local inspector.

And when you have a naked patient on the table and people need to egress?????

How many sq ft is the entire suite?????

Might as well give length and width also

Steve I'm assuming if there is an emergent need of egress the naked patient should be moving as well.
Sawhorse its roughly 60 by 100 unsprinklered. Local inspectors use 2012 I believe. Most of the spaces I'm referring to are 115+-

1014.1 General.
The exit access shall comply with the applicable provisions of Sections 1003 through 1013. Exit access arrangement shall comply with Sections 1014 through 1019.

I do not believe your proposal meets the intent of the code.
You cannot leave a rated corridor and pass through an unrated space or room
60X100 is an OL of 60. Corridors serving an OL of 30 require a 1-hour separation in a non-sprinklered building

With all the add on’s you posted,

No I would not allow it

Carve out the minimum space you need to reach the exit, without going through an office or similar

6000 sq ft there is wasted space
