We've had a few discussions about the NFPA 80 requirements for the annual inspection of fire doors...NFPA is conducting a webinar on November 9th if you'd like to hear more. If a fire code references NFPA 80 (2007 or 2010 editions) for the maintenance of fire doors, then the openings are supposed to be inspected each year. These inspections are not intended to be done by the fire marshal - just as with sprinklers, boilers, etc., the AHJ would review the documentation of the fire door inspection, not inspect each individual fire door. The reason for this inspection requirement is because many fire doors are in very sad shape and will not perform as designed. NFPA 101 contains annual inspection requirements for certain egress doors for the same reason.

I'd love to hear any questions/comments you may have about annual fire door assembly inspection, and whether you are currently enforcing this requirement or are planning to. Maybe you're enforcing it for certain types of occupancies but not others. Or if you're not planning to enforce it at all, why not?
Thanks in advance. I always appreciate your feedback! Well, except that one time but we won't revisit that.
