I am working on a project where we have designed the penthouse level roof structure using structural steel as the primary structural elements and metal stud framing for the roof joists. The majority of the exterior perimeter of the roof will be install with operable door/window systems. In order to coform with the required 2hour rating my plan was to wrap the structural steel beams and columns using gyp per approved assembly details. Once wrapped I was planning to attached my door and window systems by penetrating the gyp with the fasteners connecting to the steel member inside. My building plan checker has informed me that this is not acceptable as the penetrations would cause heat transfer as this would not be a rated assembly.
The following is the plan check comment I received;

- Provide architectural details for the fire-resistance rating protection requirement at each of the storefront connection penetrating the assembly to connect to the columns and connect to the beams. Specify the product, manufacture, and approval number of the material, and the installation requirements to maintain the hour-rating at the columns and beams where connector must penetrate the entire membrane.
