I have got a tenant finish going into a strip mall. The initial tenant (B) was asked by the owner if they would like to put in sprinklers or not, they didn't. So when a restaurant decided to take the adjacent space, I told the designer that a two hour wall would be required. Currently there is a single one hour wall as a demising wall and that dies into the exterior glazing. I offered the 2 one hour walls make a 2 hour wall prescriptive design in the 2012 as an equivalent, or line the entire wall with shaft wall, but putting up 2 addition layers to their side was not going to work. After trying to redesign the building as nonseparated and failing, the designer accepted that the 2hr wall is required, but wants to make exception 2 from 705.5 2006 IBC (glazing being noncombustible), or 705.5.1 saying that his walls make 180 degrees or greater, for continuity. I asked for the ASTM standard from the glass that would allow it to be defined as noncombustible and I informed him that his fire wall runs perpendicular to the exterior (90 degrees) and is not at 180 degrees as shown in the image he sent.706 is referenced in separated occupancies, but not 705 - although I don't know how I wouldn't enforce 705 - Where a fire wall also separates occupancies that are required to be separated by a fire barrier wall, the most restrictive requirements of each separation shall apply. Any thoughts?
