I have A firewall over 20 feet tall, does table 601 apply, which states members over 20 feet tall do not need to be protected. Under ch. 7 ( 704.1 says to meet table 601) 706.5 states roof needs to be protected 4 ft out ? being over 20 feet does that affect the 4 ft ou ?

This is in A gymnasium over 20 feet from the roof deck to the floor.

Does the deck need to be protected ?

Only the 4-foot strip on each side of the fire wall is required to be protected. Table 601 provides general requirements for all buildings of a certain construction type whether fire walls exist or not, while Section 706.5 is a specific requirement that applies only to fire wall applications. Thus, per Section 102.1, the specific requirement has precedence over the general requirement.
