Five Thousand Years Ago

My theory is that they invented Hummer-like vehicles to pull them, they drilled oil wells to fuel the Hummers, this caused the ice caps to melt and flood the world, in addition they invented building codes, their firemen flooded the code hearings and they adopted fire sprinkler ordinances, the fire sprinklers went off so much that they flooded the world and wiped out civilization as they knew it.

Ancient Aliens (not the illegal type either)
Uh, "illegal type"? If they are already south of the border, illegal would mean what? european decent?

I think the thing holding us back is that no one could build them profitably today.

With the unions battling for prevailing wage, OSHA and EPA requiring control over the worksite, and the special inspections....ugh!

The ancients built these over lifetimes. People today can't wait that long for anything.

The credibility of the "Ancient Mysteries" site is immediately suspect, as they include Noah's flood as if it were some sort of reality. However that does not negate the incredible mastery of building technology of the ancients.

mjesse sums it up pretty well - not only were they built without regard to cost and over lifetimes, but with slave labor where the slaves were dispensable. There really was not a whole lot of technology increase between these ancients and civilizations as recent as a few hundred years or so ago. Its not like Chartres cathedral was built using computer guided water jets. The rise and fall of past civilizations produced dynasties of master builders who, over multiple generations, were able to dedicate their every being into creating these wonders. It is civilization itself that enables this, with the ability of certain classes being able to concentrate on great works since the means of survival is take care of by others. Look at the complete failure of civilization in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Plumbing and central heating was established by the 1st or 2nd century, not to be seen again until about 1200 years later. The Romans did not employ "magic", they simply were able to develop classes of engineers since they had plenty of subjugated peoples to feed them.

The very old structures that we look at in awe today, are the ones remaining! What we don't see is the failed structures that taught the designers how to build. Over many years (centuries), designers learned what worked - and what didn't. They recycled (green?!!!) the failed stone masonry structures into better designs. Even some of the great cathedrals (Dr. J mentioned Chartres) were rebuilt over the rubble of failed attempts. Yes, they used mathematics, but they also used collective memory and trade secrets (the guilds were very important in teaching and guarding these secrets).

After all, the flying buttress (which replaced the solid buttress) was an engineered "fix" to a structural design flaw - pointed arches create a load path that is directed outside the footprint of the column, and thus the buttress supports the load.

Uncle Bob

When the Non-Benevelont Community Leaders who used captured conquerd slaves to do the work

designed by the best available architects and engineers of the day built these wonderous structures

for their own diefication were done with the project

THEY KILLED THEM

so the suvivors not wanting upset the diefied leader did not write a book or steal the plans to go into the tract monumentaion business

1281,

I'm told there was a time when ritual regicide ruled, when the great leader himself willingly was sacrificed for the people and society he so loved. Somewhere along the line, however, a ruler figured out that they could scrifice something else instead, symbolically. There, apparently, is where authority for its own sake got out of control.

Again, the "Ancient Mysteries" site is not worthy of any level of credibility. The Wikipedia page says the stones are sandstone, with andesite used for facing blocks. Not that Wikipedia can be considered a primary source, but at least it provides current archaeological explanations with source footnotes.

The "Ancient Mysteries" site is simply some guy who can't figure it out, so he figures it must be magic. Argument from Incredulity. He can't even get the facts straight.

No, they used laser equipment loaned to them by the aliens who were passing thru.
