Flop Room Anyone

Sounds like a flop room, just a place to hang out, when not doing the secret chapter installation ceremony in the chapter room.

They could not afford a flop house, so they just got a room.

“What does it matter”

That would be my assumption.......having toured a couple frat houses.........

Though I posted in the "Off Topics" to avoid code discussion and wanted to know if you had an interpretation of what is a flop room. Thought it could be an equivalent to a guest room.

As for the code issues the original structure was built in 1900 (an historic building) and the dark walls shown on the plans is new construction. The kitchen is being added from the basement to the terrace level and the number of sleeping units is reduced.

Alterations fall under the exception to section 301.1 in the IEBC. The new (small) addition to be sprinklered in accordance with 402.1 following an opinion; "One area that is somewhat unclear is, where IBC Chapter 9 has a zero sf threshold for sprinklers such as for Group R occupancies, whether the sprinklers would be required throughout the addition as well as the existing building or simply be limited to the addition." And where the "Alterations to the existing building together with the addition are no less conforming to he provisions of the IBC than the existing building was prior to the addition."

Had they reduced the number of occupants from 19 to 16 (R-3) instead of 17 (R-2) then we would require the installation of a NFPA 13D instead of 13R!

Seems like the submitter would have to tell you what it will be used for first,

Than you go from there .

It describes exactly what you do. You flop down.
Can't call it a restroom, even though that it what you do there.
Most people don't rest, in a restroom. ?..

The code does not list the only terms to call rooms
A flop room is legit, rumpus room? TV room? Study room? Sports Room? Drinking room? Party room?

I recently had a vague room label, which I suspected was on purpose so they could play with occupant load. I asked them to specifically define and describe what the room will be used for so I could assign an occupant load. In this case, I think it is where they walk in the door, flop down on the couch and issue a big sigh about how tired they are. I would think the DP would provide a more coherent, definable term but they are probably young and fresh out of school and it made total sense to them.

Or fresh out of modern university E- Message short word lingo, where they had a flop room at a frat, so the modern design kicked in.

Weren't any of you guys ever fraternity members? A flop room is where the brothers take the girls who come to their parties when they get drunk and need to "flop". We used to take them up to our rooms but the universities banned that so they created "flop rooms" for them to sleep it off.

Check Urban Dictionary; there are several definitions for flop house which can give you an idea for the use of a flop room.
