Manual Update: 2019 California Access Compliance Advisory Reference Manual

The 2019 California Access Compliance Advisory Reference Manual contains accessibility provisions adopted by DSA and commentary that includes the 2010 American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards and Accessible Design, and DSA provisions unique to California. The manual was recently revised to include the 2019 Intervening Code Cycle Supplement published on January 1, 2021, effective July 1, 2021.

I was really disappointed in the enlargement of residential toilet clearances.
In an era where we are trying to covert old motels and SROs into public housing for the homeless, I used to be able to make the old clearances work in a 5'-2 1/2" wide space, which was not uncommon for a CMU motel room with a furred plumbing wall.
Now this option is off the table.
I understand there was concern about the grab bar clearance over the wall-hung sink, but there were several lavs with a minimal backsplash that worked just fine. I do not know why thy hamstrung our efforts to make accessible bathroom retrofits readily achievable.
