I am not finding anything specific about where a garage floor drain should go. Does a floor drain to daylight have to have some type of oil water separator?

Use the search function with the word garage. The fifth and seventh pages have threads about floor drains in a garage.

Hi Ray,
detached garage? serving how many dwellings if any? how many motor vehicles? is it a repair garage(business of fixing car)?

I have no idea but doubt those in residential garages in NYS are inspected every 6 months. For some unknown reason, detached garages are exempt from slope or drain requirement in my jurisdiction, so I won't know.

Does anyone ever go back and inspect the separators to be sure they are working correctly?
Not on a residential property. A County department named Environmental Programs performs periodic inspections of commercial applications.

I agree that the IRC is pretty much silent on this issue. In our jurisdiction, single family garage floor drain must connect to sanitary sewer, no separator required.
