Anything on gas wells and the distance they should be from other structures?

Our city is tweaking our gas well ordinance and I am looking for anything in the building or fire code where it specifies how close a structure can be to a gas well.

Is there anything in either code? I'm looking but it is sooooo much easier asking you guys! This forum has me spoiled!!!

do not think so

most ciities draw up thier own ordinace

I think cities around here are down to 600 feet. and maybe less in some instance

The distance requirement is regulated by the city’s gas ordinance. No well may be drilled closer than 600 feet from any protected use such as a residence, religious institution, public building, hospital, school or public park without a waiver from the protected use owners or City Council approval.

Thanks cda and Fatboy. Our planning department is looking at 300 feet.

it is not bad just when they are drilling it gets noisy, oh and if they have a gas release, it gets a little noisy

The Texas Railroad Commission has no standards, unfortunately (http://www.rrc.state.tx.us/barnettshale/index.php#faqs). You will find city ordinances that run the spectrum from 200' to 1000'. Most cities specify a greater setback from residences, schools and churches than they do other structures. We require 1000' from residences, schools, churches and parks, and 300' from other buildings.

I stand corrected by myself;

a. At the time of initial drilling of the well, the wellhead location shall be not less than two hundred (200) feet from any occupied building, and not less than three hundred fifty (350) feet from any educational facility, assembly building, hospital, nursing home, board and care facility or jail in those areas which are high-density areas, as defined in Subsection 18.56.030(b) above, or outdoor activity area as designated by the State.

b. At the time of initial installation, production tanks and/or associated on-site production equipment shall be located not less than two hundred (200) feet from any occupied building and not less than five hundred (500) feet from an educational facility, assembly building, hospital, nursing home, board and care facility, jail or State-designated outdoor activity area. Said five-hundred-foot setback shall be decreased to the maximum achievable setback if five hundred (500) feet would extend beyond the area on which the operator has a legal right to place or construct such facilities.
