Giving Wires a Little Tug

That moment when you see 3 wires plus a ground coming out of a ceiling box on a renovation but give the wires a little tug only to find that the electrician only ran a 2 wire for the smoke detectors and strategically placed a red wire in the box to make it look like he actually ran the required 3 wire for the interconnected smoke detectors.

When questioned because you figure they would have been caught at final, his response was that he was going to use the ground as the communication line so it would work.

Do you think any future inspections with the type of electrician should be detailed and with caution?

We had something similar a few years back.

One of my inspectors wrote a correction notice for not having a UFER ground in a new SFD.

He was called back for a reinspect, sure enough, there's the rebar with the ground, he walked over and gave it a tub, popped right out in his hand.

It had been drilled in two inches, and an attempt was made to secure it with epoxy.

sheeesh….

Never thought of pulling on rebar or a rod. But have had problems with drain piping tests with gages stuck in one position or one time a guy had one of those inflatable balls a few inches in the pipe from the cap with a gage. When I let the air out it just when psst real quick so I knew something was wrong.

In Canada we are expected to exercise more caution with someone who has proven themselves to be untrustworthy. Keep in ind you didn't decide that this individual needs a more in depth inspection. They PROVED that they needed one. People get to decide how we treat them.
