A large light used in video production was placed too close to a heat sensor, which caused the sprinkler system to trip.

The Beverly Hills Fire Department worked with the Beverly Hills Hotel maintenance staff to remove the water. Sections of carpet are being cut up and replaced.

Irine Spivak, public relations manager at the The Beverly Hilton, released this statement: "We can confirm that there was a malfunction with a sprinkler near the red carpet. The situation was quickly resolved. ...As some of the biggest names in entertainment are scheduled to attend Golden Globe Awards tonight, we wanted to give the carpet one last wash before it opened."

The red carpet is still scheduled to open on time at 5:15 p.m. ET.

Not enough info. What heat sensor? A heat detector wired to the FACP? Not likely. Do they mean a sprinkler head which has a heat sensor in the form of fusible links or glass bulb links. Was the sprinkler system a pre-action system? Not likely. If the heat source was too close the sprinkler head, the head did not malfunction, people malfunctioned by improper placement of the heat source.

Too bad the newsteam does not verify "facts" with someone in the industry.

regardless this in not a malfunction, the device operated property, it sensed heat and activated. This rather is bad reporting of improper clearance between a heat producing item to a heat sensing device .
