For anyone with access to the 2009 ICC Building Code, does 903.2.1.2 Group A-2 still require sprinklers for fire areas with occupancy greater than 100? Only have the 2006 edition here and was making sure there was no changes. Thanks now.

Yes. Occupant load of 100 or more in the A-2 fire area requires a sprinkler system.

903.2.1.2 Group A-2. An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided for Group A-2 occupancies where one of the following conditions exists: [F]

1. The fire area exceeds 5,000 square feet (464.5 m2);

2. The fire area has an occupant load of 100 or more; or

3. The fire area is located on a floor other than a level of exit discharge serving such occupancies.

I know VA retained the 300 for all but nightclubs that got the 100 threshold.

If your thinking ahead for Florida, it may end up being a lower threshold depending on what type of A-2 you're talking about. Since the state reconciles the Life Safety Code with the IBC it will probably lower the threshold to 50 for night clubs and bars with live entertainment.

If the facility is in Florida, the Florida Fire Prevention Code with Florida amendments is the 2007 Edition of NFPA 1 and 101 and in accordance with 13.3.2.5.1 (1-4) the threshold is 100 people for:



(1) Dance Halls

(2) Discotheques

(3) Nightclubs or similar uses

(4) Assembly occupancies with festival seating [101:12.3.5.1]



13.3.2.5.2 Buildings >300 (1-3)

13.3.2.5.3 Exempts 13.3.2.5.2 for



(1) Single multi-purpose rooms <12000 s.f. not used for exhibition or display and are not part of a mixed occupancy and sub sections (2-4)
