VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Some of the handicapped spots outside of Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach have been converted for police officers only.

In front of the movie theater, one of the new spots has a sign that reads "reserved parking for police vehicles only," but the handicapped symbol is still painted on the ground, causing some confusion among disabled customers.

A 10 On Your Side viewer wanted to know the reason for the change.

"For the safety of our shoppers, we have placed parking spaces for police and emergency personnel in close proximity to the entrances of the shopping center," John Westbrook, Senior General Manager of Lynnhaven Mall, said.

Mall security said management and community service initiatives are responsible for ticketing restricted parking areas.

Westbrook did not have specific numbers of how many spots have been set aside for police vehicles. However, he says the mall has more than adequate handicapped parking surrounding the property at every entrance.

All private businesses must follow ADA guidelines, which require properties with one to 25 spaces have one handicapped spot; 26 to 52 spaces, two handicapped spots; and so on. When the number of spaces reaches 500, the handicapped spots are measured with a percentage of the total.

The fact that the police would userp some of the handicapped spots for themselves is reprehensible. If they want to dedicate parking spots for police, they need to be taken from the able bodied spaces, not the spaces for the disabled.

This kind of reminds me of the UCLA athetes that were somehow getting their hands on and using disabled stickers for their vehicles. Unexcusable.
