Lions, Tigers, Bears on the Loose in Ohio

As many as 48 wild animals, including cheetahs, grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, tigers and lions are on the loose in the area of Zanesville, Ohio, after they escaped from a private wildlife preserve, police said tonight.

Officers believe they have shot as many as 25 of the animals so far, but it is not clear exactly how many escaped, according to the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said that until the animals are rounded up, people should stay inside.

“These are wild animals, wild animals that you would see on TV in Africa,” Mutz said at a news conference this evening.

Terry Thompson, the owner of the preserve was found dead, but it’s not clear yet how he died, the sheriff said.

“This is a bad situation,” Mutz said. “It’s been a bad situation for a long time and the last thing we want to do is have any of our public hurt.”

The animals’ pens were found open, and deputies are working with the animals’ caregiver, who says the animals were fed Monday.

They’re putting food in the animals’ pens in the hopes they might return the pens where they can then secure the animals.

Police describe the animals as “mature, very big and aggressive.”

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has cordoned off seven square miles near Interstate 70 and officers are using infrared to find the animals.

"Grandma got run over by a Reindeer"

A reindeer has been removed from Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch after it ran over and injured an 89-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon at the ranch.

Ranch owner Mark Hardy said the woman, identified by Prairie Village as Ruth Morris, 89, was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where she was treated for injuries to both of her arms after they were poked by the reindeer’s antlers.

Morris was listed in good condition at Carle late Wednesday afternoon.

Hardy said he had just completed giving a tour of the ranch in rural Rantoul to four or five residents of the Prairie Village retirement community at the time of the incident.

According to Hardy, a gate had accidentally been left open. Morris was attempting to close it when Daisy, a 4-year-old reindeer, managed to crawl under a wooden fence with a crossbar about 3 feet above the ground.

“She got on her belly and managed to crawl under the bar,” said ranch co-owner Julie Hardy. “Daisy is the only one of our reindeer who is able to do that.”

The animal ran to the gate in an effort to reach a grazing area on the other side.

“Daisy is a bottle-fed reindeer. She’s usually extremely friendly, and she is not afraid of humans,” Mark Hardy said. “But Daisy is in heat, and we are right in the middle of breeding season, so she is a little bit aggressive.”

Mark Hardy said the reindeer ran over Morris, who he said was trying to stop the animal, which poked both of the woman’s arms with her antlers.

“Daisy has a fairly good set of antlers,” Mark Hardy said. “I tried to yell not to mess with the deer, and the deer was pretty persistent about getting out. She just squared up, and the woman put her arms out. It’s not a pleasant thing.”

Julie Hardy said this was the first incident of an injury due to one of their animals in the ranch’s 16 years of operation.

Mark Hardy said Daisy has been taken to another farm in the area and will not be returned to the ranch for the rest of the year.

“We entertain thousands of people a year,” Mark Hardy said. “For the most part, our animals are not like that. Something like this happening is upsetting to us.”
