Honolulu is just like any other city. Maui is the real "Hawaii" experience.Lahaina is fantastic
Need to make it to Pearl Harbor, My dad was there that day

I agree with kilitact, Kauai was excellent, not crowded easy to get around, literally...........our first HI trip also, don't think I would even try somewhere else!

We did go there as well, powerful experience. A must see.

However, it's in easy trip on either the arrival or departure day since most folks will arrive via HNL.

Aside form Pearl, the other islands offer the "Hawaiian getaway" most people imagine on their first trip. IMHO

cda,

I have been to Oahu and to the Big Island of Hawaii [ all over the

island of Oahu ].

If you "must" see Pearl Harbor, then Oahu will be the primary island.

The beach at Waikiki ain't all that !........Very touristy [ <---- is

that even a word ? ]........Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots

of hotels around downtown Honolulu, which is where Waikiki is located.

I highly, highly recommend that you shop and compare rooms and

the multitude of deals on the internet BEFORE reserving anything.

The prices and rates change constantly !

You can do the Pearl Harbor experience [ out to the U.S.S. Arizona ]

in a half day excursion.....Very interesting and well organized facility.

Back in 1993 & 1994, ...petroleum products were still seeping out of

the tomb of the U.S.S. Arizona.........See the YouTube link:

[ As a veteran, I HIGHLY recommend that every U.S. citizen visit the

U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. ]

I visited Oahu in 1993 and the Big Island in 1994.......For me,

the Big Island visit was all of one day in total......I purchased an island

tour along with my round-trip airline flight from Oahu........IMO.

depending upon your amount of time to visit the neighboring islands, I

recommend all of them.........Each one of the neighboring islands has

something unique to offer........Since I chose to visit the Big Island,

naturally I would recommend it.......Do some searching on the internet

to find something that peaks yours [ and your wife' ] interest and go

for it.......You will not be disappointed in any of the side trips.......There

are a multitude of adventures, ...boat trips [ sightseeing ], ...fishing,

...diving, ...snorkeling, ...on land sightseeing trips, ...shopping, etc.

There used to be scooters and Harleys that you could rent and ride

in downtown Honolulu.

Because the islands are relatively small [ relatively speaking ], you can

do a lot of things in one day, so be prepared to have a plan on what

you desire to do.

Honolulu = Like any major metropolitan city, Honolulu DOES have the

crime element intertwined in it.......Be aware at all times of your

surroundings [ this statement is mostly for your wife ].......I found

Honolulu to be a safe and clean city.......Afterall, tourism IS its main

industry, but like any city, there ARE areas to avoid !.....The mass

transit system [ back then anyway ] was cheap, effective, and a

good way to get around.

If you have any questions, I will try to answer them as best as I can.

Ask away, or send me a PM.

FWIW, I can be hired to be an island tour guide for you !

We have been to Maui 3 times love it. We always stay at the Maui Kai and the Mahana on Kaanapali(sp?) beach, if you go to the Mahana web site there is a web cam to look at. They are condo's that is right on the beach all condos over look the water. It has a super market just across the street and you a 5 min drive to Lahaina. We have also been to Oahu 2 times, its more of the big city with lots to do not very relaxing.

Hope you get a chance to go
