Heavy Timber Fastening

I have small Residential project where the owners want to use heavy type timbers

( i.e. - 6" x 6" treated posts ) to construct / support a small patio roof.

Is there somewhere in the IRC that specifies the type of fasteners to be used

on heavy timber type framing components?

Thanks!

FWIW, the owners want that "rustic, rough cut wood" look for the framing. :confused:

.

The IBC does not require different types of fasteners for heavy timber although some types are naturally more appropriate.

Because the timbers will be rough sawn the actual dimensions of the lumber will vary slightly and may require custom pieces of hardware.

It could be Timber Framed, with wood joinery and connections. The TF Guild has good publications.

It could be Post and Beam with metal connections, side plates could be metal or wood.

Design data for post and beam is in the NDS, a fair amount is in their online connections calc, those are the folks from Mule's post above. The AITC website has some good downloads and books for purchase too.

Do they grade and stamp the timbers? If I remember correctly when I was building in NM, there was a NM exemption for this. Both peeled logs (essentially round timbers that they call them vigas) and square timbers are frequently used as they have been for hundreds of years there.

Either in the IBC or one of the reference standards you will find provisions that allow a grading certificate to substitute for the stamp on the lumber. This may raise chain of custody issues. If there was a concern you could require that they be regraded.

Sure, I've got a few links handy. I'll try to add more as they come to mind. If there is a specific need it might help jog something loose.

Start with the NDS, that is going to be your base reference. Dr Woeste just posted an upcoming class based around the latest version, I see AWC's Buddy Showalter will also be there.

Post and Beam, the AITC is the go to folks, their publication index;

Grab the typical details download. The Timber Construction Manual is a very good reference.

Timber Frame Engineering Council library;

The joinery and design workbooks here are very good;

More books here, "Historic English Carpentry" is a gem;
