I need some experts in the masonry chimney arena please. I went to a job today with a couple of big masonry fireplaces. From what I could tell, not much of the installation meets the requirements of chapter 10. I haven't had much experience with these so maybe its me that is wrong but I'll list a few items from memory. If anyone has solid hands-on experience inspecting these straighten me out if need be.
1-The f/p opening is 42"wx48"h=2016si=201.6si cross section of square flue, 11"x11" installed but 16x20 or 18x18 required (used option 1 for sizing)
2-The lintel/damper/throat are one piece with the top of the damper/throat 6" above the f/p opening (code requires 8"?)
3-The interior surface of the smoke chamber is parged but not smooth, very rough troweled with probably 1/4" to 3/8" surface variations
4-The distance from the throat to the flue is 8', code limits it to the inside dimension of the firebox (42"?)
I asked the GC who designed and built them and he said his mason. There are some differences for Rumsford fireplaces but other than a few pics in the commentary I don't know what they are. I did see a box on sight that said Rumsford on it. I think it contained some components but I didn't want to open it.
Finally, what are his options if I am correct? Total reconstruction or can DP's get involved? I just don't see many of these and if I ever did I guess I never looked very hard until I got here.
