If city council has its' way, I'll be jobless in the next month or so. The plan is to merge the city building dept. with the county building dept., as it was about 20 years ago. County Supervisors will have to approve it before it becomes a reality.

The county is down to 1 building inspector to cover a territory of 4,203.37 sq mi (10,886.7 km2) minus the 2.4 sq. mile encompassed within the City of Alturas boundaries.

County guy has no commercial certs, only the CABO 1&2 Family Dwelling cert required by county for employment.

County has been primarily residential as there are no other incorporated cities, towns, etc. in the county. County guy has called me with questions on commercial and admitted he knows nothing about commercial nor wants to inspect it.

I have commercial and residential certs, not all but more than required by the City. Every project of any value I have going right now is commercial. It will be very interesting in the city if I do lose my job.

Yes, I do it all - building inspection, permitting, plan check, nuisance abatement, code enforcement, all my admin, planning admin, fences, setbacks, fueling planes weekends @ city airport, and whatever else gets thrown my way!

Oooh sounds familiar! The solution that worked for me was that a position was created so the newly combined offices would be fully staffed (there were two of us). I did the same work in the enlarged district and it worked out OK.

It did take a little selling it to the pols, but when they reviewed the numbers they saw the need. Good Luck

What a disservice to the citizenry of the City. I'm sorry to hear that the city council will make such poor decisions. Why would they throw away a well-qualified administrator for a novice? I wish you the best here...and in the future.

But can he drive a snowplow? Fueling planes in small airports is a very important job, much more important than inspecting buildings. Several times I've landed at small airports and finding someone to fuel me has taken hours, I recall taking friends to a small airport in Utah, it took hours to find the only guy in town who could do it, then I had to worry about the fuel being contaminated since nobody had fueled up there in months; sure enough, as I started climbing over the mountains the turbochargers on one engine didn't come on and I blamed the fuel, but I kept fooling with the manifold pressure controls and they did come on, so appropriately no contamination.

Thanks for all the encouragement! I probably won't know anything one way or the other for a couple weeks.

My boss was blindsided with this development the day before he left on a much needed and deserved vacation. He will be talking to the idiots and is also trying to find other things for me to do and keep me.

I have provided him with a couple key arguments for my retention - the principal one being I am the only person who can cover for him on issues with planning, encroachment permits, water & sewer line inspections, etc. while he takes a week off with his family.

The other is that I was hired back in '05 due to the fact the previous director of PW couldn't wear three hats - PW, Planning, and Building Departments - and manage any effectively. That was the year we had one commercial project, the new Rite Aid store. This year, I will have three commercial projects all going at the same time in various stages of completion.

Sue. You are in a tough spot. I am interested to know if you have ever considered leaving your position to pursue another avenue? I do not know the economies of your location, or if moving is an option, but do believe a person with your drive, knowledge and integrity, (as expressed in this forum for years) will not, indeed, be found wanting for employment for long. I will join the others here and pray for a better than ever outcome for you.

Sorry to hear about the situation. Shasta county is hiring i think if you don't mind the commute. Maybe the powers that be will figure out that their plan sucks before it is implemented!

Thanks for the encouragement. I am, unfortunately, in a dying area of rural CA. There are no other jobs here, at least until the Dollar General gets built. I will have to leave to find a job in any field.

I was planning on retiring in 4 years to the UP of Michigan, it's just not going to be retirement now. I will be relocating to look for employment. I'm done with CA - the regs, the taxes, the stupidity of government, etc, etc, etc.!

Sue, Anybody on this board in the vicinity of the Keewenaw Peninsula of Michigan?

Yeah, I saw the job. Unfortunately, it will close before I have any answer. I also do not have a current PC 832 or a CACEO cert. And with what goes on there, I'm not so sure I want to do code enforcement without a sidearm. ;-)

yeah! I think they will be having inspectors doing compliance inspections for the potheads. I wonder if they require the inspectors to do sampling?:mrgreen:

Love your tag line, it is correct - no good deed goes unpunished. I try my hardest to do the best job and get thrown under the bus for all my troubles. County building has a reputation for being arrogant *****es in the past. The one guy with the worst reputation is no longer in the building department.

I do feel a little bad that the remaining county building guy is getting saddled with all the inspections in the entire city/county. The more remote parts of the county take about an hour and a half to drive to and these are on a set schedule. Not ready on inspection day, too bad, it's next week.

Then there are my two commercial projects with completion dates of mid-June(14 weeks) and July 1st. Nothing like switching hoses in the middle of the stream. :mrgreen:
