ibc 2003 occupancy content

i am having issues with the occupant load for a metal fabrication plant ... this plant makes semi trailers for trucks...(occup type "F-2"-low hazard factory) the fabrication

machine area consumes maybe 75% of the floor area... not leaving much space for people

the area is 53,640 gsf and a type 2 unprotected unspkld metal building....

i have two questions:

a) is there a portion of the code that lets me calculate the "occupiable"space on a manufacturing floor... i can show a layout of fabrication machines and amount left over for "occupiable area for people"

b) is there some method to mitigate the 100sf/ person required for F2 occupancy.

I did see section 503.1.2 special industrial occupancies related to h/a table... thus i am exempt from section 503 on h/a.

any help appreciated

the 2003 does not look like it has the exception in it.

You can always ask for it::

Exception: Where approved by the building official, the

actual number of occupants for whom each occupied

space, floor or building is designed, although less than

those determined by calculation, shall be permitted to be

used in the determination of the design occupant load.

why are you wanting a reduced occupant load????

If you are good with it, you can fall back on 104.11, Alternate methods.........................

Typically, the whole floor sq. footage is used in the calculations in these

places, because the different kinds of machinery & equipment can be

changed \ altered \ moved around, without consideration of a reduced

or increased Occ. Loading, ...unless a specific Occ. Load is requested !

For exiting I would use 1 per 100 sq ft industrial. For plumbing fixtures the actual number of employees.

1004.1 Design occupant load.

In determining means of egress requirements, the number of occupants for whom means of egress facilities shall be provided shall be established by the largest number computed in accordance with Sections 1004.1.1 through 1004.1.3.

1004.1.1 Actual number.

The actual number of occupants for whom each occupied space, floor or building is designed.

1004.1.2 Number by Table 1004.1.2.

The number of occupants computed at the rate of one occupant per unit of area as prescribed in Table 1004.1.2.

thanks to all... the reason is that occupancies over 500 triggers major fire alarm issues and in texas it includes horns/strobes etc in each room that has more than one occupant... (texas accessibility standards aka:ada)

also the very expensive fire alarm system.....again thanks to all...

i suppose i will have to wrestle in the mud

Unless I missed the wording, it doesn't say occupant load of 500,

it says 500 occupant above the level of exit discharge

(I think that means 500 second floor occupants and up, or basement occupants)

(and also note that 907.2.4 doesn't apply to 1 story buildings
