I couldn't find anything in the code that specifically prohibits this, but I was hoping that someone could help us out.
We have a residential building that serves individual dwelling units. Specifically for one floor (3rd), if we keep our occupancy under 10 we're only required to have one exit stair. There's two sides of a hall, each one ending in an exit stair. The total floor occupancy load is over 10, but if we make a room (and split the hall), each side is under 10. If we keep it as is, the run for the means of egress exceeds 250'.
Can we, in essence, split the building in half at the third floor, and direct the occupants to the single stair at the end of the hall (which applies to them). If we can, would we need to have any fire rating requirements (beyond the ones we already have).
Sprinkled. Assembly below (2nd floor); no 4th floor. We'd turn this room (that splits the hall) into storage (that's only accessible from one side and doesn't connect).
