IBC 2018 – Question on 1-Hour Fire Resistance Requirement for Exterior Exit Stairways

Hello,

I’m currently designing an exterior exit stairway for an existing four-story building in accordance with IBC 2018.

While reviewing the applicable sections regarding fire protection for exterior exit stairways, I noted the requirement to protect stair users from fire exposure originating from the building. The IBC Commentary provides helpful diagrams illustrating the areas requiring 2-hour and 1-hour fire-resistance-rated construction.

I’m able to meet the 2-hour fire-resistance requirement as indicated. However, I have a question regarding the application of the 1-hour fire-resistance requirement.

In my case, one wall of the stair landing is 5 feet long and will be constructed to meet the 1-hour fire-resistance rating. To meet the total 10 feet of required 1-hour-rated wall, can I utilize an adjacent existing building wall that runs perpendicular (90 degrees) to the first wall to make up the remaining 5 feet? In other words, does the 10 feet of 1-hour-rated protection need to be in a continuous straight line, or can it turn a corner and still comply?

I’ve attached a sketch illustrating the specific condition for reference.

Thank you in advance for your insights.
