So the question comes in today "INNER CITY" Three Family Tenement Dwelling types

We want to install 300 to 400 of the ECO AIRE

see it here http://www.motherearthnews.com/biz-bulletins/2400-ecoaire-pellet-stove.aspx

I used to Like Mother Earth News but OUCH!!

Looks like a No Permit - Screw it in - Plug it in - BURN IT DOWN type of thing here

Has anyone here seen these foolish things.

Just because you can dosen't mean you should!!!!!!

At $2248.00 they aren't likely to be a big hit.

It needs a fan assist for the exhaust so what might happen if the power is interrupted while it is cooking pellets is a question.

When filled with pellets, it weighs 142 lbs. which may be a bit much for some window frames.

Well if you are a Land Baron Landlord and the units come with heat at 3-4$ a gal oil you would now say Here is your furnace - fill it or be cold. - can just imagine that scene playing out, and the sources of fuel chancing to Cherrio's

Unfortunatly these look and act like space heaters and may not need a permit at all. so we may have to look at Property Maint Code issues and space heater limitations.

Worse if its in the only bedroom window even the Mfg say not intended for bedroom use - who is to saY??

I looked at the information availalbe and they are not UL listed and how about the emergency escape and rescue openings in bedrooms?

But the mfg tiny print says not intended for bedroom but that egress issues is the same for AC units except the window unit is more likely to be the source of ignition.

We allow not only UL the kleenex of approval agencies but logically accept anyone mentioned on the OSHA NRTL lists. The UL requirement drive me nuts cause many of our Local AHJ's think thats the only lab in existance - to UL does a great marketing job

Whats the issue, no permit required, air not taken from room, listed appliance etc, similar to ac window units etc.

Called "Listed" test lab - yes they tested units for the manufacturer but none of those for windows- egress in window and Space heaters in dwellins prohibited by fire code thank goodness (except electric)
so you prohibit AC in windows? where in the fire code does it prohibit plug in appliances?

In RI it Prohibits space heaters otehr than electric and that carries to Property Maint code as an ammendment.

so this was not around when that was written but it works and you are correct if it was not there neither would we be.

"Therefore, it is important that the exhaust system be inspected and

cleaned at least bi-monthly during the burning season"

Owner's Manual

Heck, we can't even get chimneys cleaned on an annual basis...... now you want me to clean the exhaust flue twice a month?

Disco inferno comes to mind.....
