Working on a project where we have intermediate elevator rail support steel that is inside an elevator shaft wall framed with studs and sheathing.

Is it acceptable for elevator guide rail support steel to interrupt a 2-hour rated elevator shaft wall assembly made of metal studs and two layers of gypsum board in a four-story, steel-framed Type 1B building?

If the steel is exposed in the shaft, does it need to be fireproofed? My colleague is suggesting intumescent paint is required and I want to confirm this.

IMO its IB construction all structural framing members should be fireproofed or encased in fire rated construction

In my opinion, the elevator rail is not a building structural member.

I do not see a reason to fireproof it ,or its support.

The penetration of the support into the gypsum boards needs to be fire proofed as any penetration would need to be.

If you really needed to protect the support with intumescent paint, you would have to calculate the thickness and if these are small parts such a calculation could be a puzzle, or not?

Do you have to fireproof a steel stair inside a 2-hour exit enclosure?
