Inventions 101

Greetings to all!

I have an idea of something that I would like to develop to

introduce in to the marketplace, ...an invention if you will.

A new kind of widget!

I have no idea of how to get this "widget" developed and

introduced.

Can someone please provide a list of steps that I would

need to take to get this new widget developed, ...marketed,

and protected so that anyone that I speak with about it

doesn't develop / introduce it first. From the Jerry Seinfeld

Show, ..sort of like Kramer's "The Beach" cologne.

Pitch angel investors.

Build minimum viable product.

Pitch venture capital.

Hold IPO.

Retire to Bahamas.

What about copyright or patent protection, ..non-disclosure agreements,

other ? If / when I get ready to go pitch the new widget to potential

investors, manufacturers, other, what's to keep them from taking my

idea and running with it? Also, are there any reputable web sites out

there to gather some more information ? Is hiring a copyright or

patent attorney useful, or would I be just throwing money away ?

All opinions and actual experience is welcome!

No, my idea is not any type of "wire mesh thingy" to hold down a patio,

in fact, my idea is not even related to the construction industry.

A prototype is worth far more than an NDA - your idea is orders of magnitude more likely to die from lack of interest than someone stealing it and building another one.
