I have wood framed walls with gypsum board full height in some areas and 6" above ceiling height in others. Is fire blocking required in the wall cavities at the intersection of the suspended ceilings?

I am assuming this is a commercial application, with an interior wall. Fire blocking is required between floors, and between a top story and a roof or attic space per 718.1 of the 2018 IBC.

Attic is defined in chapter 2 as the space between the ceiling framing of the top story and the underside of the roof.

I could see fireblocking being required if the space above the ceiling would be considered an attic.

Best thing to do is to ask the local building department.

718.2.3 requires separation between the vertical spaces and the horizontal space above a drop ceiling.

If the drywall is full height....no....where it is not....yes, you can install blocking at the top of the gyp, it does not have to be at ceiling height.....
