Folks,

Well, I held off 2 months longer than I had planned and, well, it is that time again to remind everyone that this forum is free and packed with a lot of information, actually a real lot of information. About the free part. It is free to you if you want it to be but it costs me money to operate and the revenue generated by the banners you see has been dwindling to less than half of what it was now that Google figured out ways to pay less. I have been unsuccessful getting any companies to sponsor ads but I still keep trying, even soliciting ad agencies.

We have lost approximately 60 Sawhorses and Supporters that were once financial contributors to the forum. That is a big chunk and really hurts.

If you are already an active Sawhorse or Supporter then there is nothing for you to do, I appreciate your contribution and know that it is because of you that we exist. There really is no other forum or message board quite like this one which was born from the shutting down of the ICC board back in October of 2009.

What are some of our expenses? Well, let me once again remind everyone. These are the top 3 and certainly not all inclusive.

1) Server lease. We have grown and had to update the server. Recently the server company had a power-issue that should not have happened then one of the disks went bad so now we need to add backup service, an added expense we are forced to make beginning this month.

2) IT Support. The software gets updates at least 6-8 times a year. They have to be implemented by a specialist who really knows what they are doing. This is not a fixed expense but almost becoming one based on the last 5+ years.

3) Software licensing, for the mobile apps, iPhone app, this forum software licensing, etc.

Basically this has become its own machine that needs to be fueled and maintained. I had no idea that this would be so big and that is w great thing.

I want to talk about my time. First, I would like to thank the volunteer moderators and administrators who have taken the time to ensure that this forum is kept professional. Without your help I would be even more overwhelmed than I already am. That brings me to my whining time ;) You see, I do all of this on a volunteer basis too and have to spend a few hours each day looking at email, working with new members, answering "how to" questions about the forum via private message, doing the more simple maintenance of the site that I don't have to pay an IT expert for such as the counters, databases, logs, etc. that no one knows about. I have said it before and I will say it again, I don't mind taking the time but I am doing it all for free so a couple of extra bucks to help out would be nice. I am not on a salary for this, there is no paycheck.

I have tried a classified section but no one uses it. I tried a store but it was rarely used, I tried having the members decide on designs for shirts, hats, logo, etc to help drive up members and generate revenue but honestly, if I don't do it myself, it won't get done.

SO, here is what I am asking for:

1) If you are not a Sawhorse or Supporter, I ask that you become a Sawhorse or Supporter by clicking on the link(s) below.

2) If you are a Sawhorse or Supporter, I ask that you please renew when the time comes.

3) If you were a Sawhorse or Supporter but fell off the horse, I ask the you kindly get back on the horse and become a Sawhorse or Supporter again.

There are many benefits to being a Sawhorse or Supporter, see this link to find out more: http://www.thebuildingcodeforum.com/forum/website-discussion/9677-difference-between-sawhorse-registered-member.html

More importantly, click on this link to start your subscription as a Sawhorse or Supporter: http://www.thebuildingcodeforum.com/forum/payments.php

Finally, again, I would like to thank everyone for participating in this forum in your posts, your questions, interaction or just reading. We still need your help to keep this forum alive and running.

So what's free about it? I haven't found much in this life that's free and worth having. People can participate in this forum without any financial contribution so that's free for them? Well not really....somebody is paying to keep the lights on. So is it still free for them or are they riding on another's coattail?

Here's an idea. (it was a lousy idea and it is gone)

There's enough experts at this forum that nobody could afford them and yet they are available for a pittance.

I still believe that this should be a public domain for people to find and participate. A lot of people come here, read what they need to and never even register, let alone contribute. That is simply the way it is. For them, yes, it's free. For those that are not Supporters or Sawhorses, yes, it's free. Are they riding on the coattails of other? I guess you can look at it that way. Right now and for the past 5+ years there has been a fine line that I have been walking with regards to benefits to Sawhorses, Supporters and regular members. Recently, one of our long time, original members got upset that they could not download attachments without being a Supporter or Sawhorse so they picked up their ball and went home. I can't keep everyone happy and I think it is more than reasonable to have an expectation that people simply pony up.

With all of that being said, one of the options that I kicked around was not allowing the public to see the content of posts (that may create a search engine bot problem) unless they register. Now I am thinking about doing something similar to registered members who are not Sawhorses or Supporters. We as a group have now created a very large database of useful information that has a lot of value to it. This is, however, just an idea.......................

For those that are Sawhorses, you've done enough, i only ask that you renew when the time comes. I am looking for fresh, new or old faces to start contributing financially.

Have a great day folks!

Cap'n, I've had an epiphany! [smee (Bob Hoskins) to Hook (Dustin Hoffman)]

Just have the OP visible to public and unpaid registered users. Kinda "like" a teaser, get 'em hooked, then reel 'em in to pay.

First, and foremost, ...MEGA Thanks to Jeff for stepping

up BIG when ICC let us down !

I recently renewed my subscription for another 2 years.

I consider $60.00 a GREAT investment in this very

valuable resource.

Heck, ...the entertainment value alone is worth more

than $60.00 [ RE: Just take a look at **Tigerloose**

portfolio of pictures. **MASSDRIVER** gets an

honorable mention here for his efforts ! :-D ].

Plus, there are some really GREAT people on here,

...now & in the past [ RE: **Daddy-O** to mention

one ].

IMO, ...the regular Members and Sawhorses should

make an attempt to recruit more Sawhorses.......The

people who really value this site will be around for

a long, long time, because they recognize it's value

and appreciate it's content.

Also, IMO, ...the basic economics of owning &

operating this site will require a larger dollar amount

for the subscriptions.......It is that simple !........Heck,

I eat more than $60.00 worth in a single week.

What is this site worth to feed our minds ?

FWIW, ...I can still customize a wall certificate for

you, ...if you are a Sawhorse.

Jeff, is there a way to give a Sawhorse subscription to someone as a gift? They are registered as a member.

Yes, you can make the payment via paypal (even if you don't have paypal, you can use a credit card) then message me what you did and for who and I will add it into their subscription profile.

and if we just want to donate, even though or subsciption is not due?? How is that done?

Considering that there's 130 or so still here with another 30 on the way out....60 is an exodus.

It really does amaze me that some of the regular users of this forum could continue to come here, ask questions, seek assistance, venture opinions, and could not feel the need to contribute to the forum.............unreal. You know who you are, pony up some dollars to keep this machine rolling.

Shucks fatboy, there's more than enough money coming in.

The counter says that there are 6,499 members. 6000 of those members were here once and have not returned ....ever. 200 of those members haven't been here in months. The 299 that look, listen and participate is a small group.

The general public (guests) comprise the bulk of the traffic. Perhaps routing them through one of the banner ads before they can get into the forum is possible. I don't see why it would matter and if it deterred them from getting in....so what....they're dead weight. I don't know what that would produce but Jeff favors getting people to look at the ads.

The subject of this forum appeals to a limited segment of the population. Think about it. building inspection.... codes.... accessibility.... fun stuff huh. Take the number of the people employed by building departments and multiply by .01 and that's how many people that will find this forum interesting enough to participate. Perhaps 1% of that 1% is aware of this forum.

You need to post more interesting picture.

The banner ads are blocked here at work and I am rarely on at home.

How about creating an invoice that can be printed, that could be turned into the powers to be for approval. Some may use it to get their work to pay for it. I would think most AHJ's would since it is job related.

I have posted thousands and had little to no effect. It takes more than entertainment too get people to spend money for a forum. If they take away some education it may convince them that this is worth it.

Unfortunately, ...basic human nature [ in some ] is such that thebelief is "why buy the cow, when I can get the milk for free".

SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

IMO, ...managing this Forum is a growing responsibility and

burden to Jeff.........For it to continue growing & growing; as

I am sure that it is, revenues will have to increase to cover

the expenses of the electronic needs of Forum itself, plus any

personnel needed to assist Jeff.........This Forum has become

a real player in the Construction Codes realm.........Just look

at who our closest competitor is, ...The Cow !

That said, ...if the revenues do not continue to increase, Jeff

[ may ] have to start looking for a suitor...........Then what ?

Would any of us want the responsibility & burden of owning,

operating & maintaining this GREAT resource ?..........It

started out as a side interest, but it will, at some point,

become a Corporate entity; if it hasn't already.

Let's face it, ...this Forum is a very large & valuable resource

to the Construction Codes world.........To remain solvent,

the revenues simply have to increase.........That's Business

Class 101.

Jeff's kind heart and vision to have this Forum remain free

to all who come here is a truly noble and very generous one.

To have that vision remain free to all, ...someone; besides

Jeff, will need to provide a substantial revenue stream, or

else.

I am not quite sure how to have it remain "free to all", and

yet, ...have a continual source of income to sustain it.

Quite the conundrum huh ?

Your thoughts..., PLEASE !

We are making headway folks and I appreciate it. Since I posted this, we now only have 51 expired Sawhorses vs the almost 60 we started with. I appreciate the effort and hope to continue to see some more new names in the Sawhorse and Supporter community.

Again, thank you.

Jeff
