If I go to a site that won't let me see pictures unless I become a registered member, odds are I'm not around long. But then if I see some crazy weird ***** along the way, now that might be for me.

I notice that when I post a new thread there will be an immediate response of 10 or so people looking in. They are guests. Since most of what I do has a picture attached, how about letting a guest see the picture. Rather than disappointing them it might be beneficial to include them. In the grand scheme of things, my contribution is such a small part of what goes on here that I wouldn't think it would matter.

More guest activity should translate into more members and sawhorses. Oh and thanks one more time for that, brudgers.

One of the things that drives membership is the ability to see the pictures. It is sort of like dangling a carrot. I will shut it off for 1 month from May 1 to May 31 and see if the traffic we have/get changes compared to how it has been tracking. If there is no change then I put it back, if traffic is better than anticipated (we are steadily growing) then I will leave it off. I will just need a reminder, thats all.

It is hard to know until you try it. I will be be on vacation for the next two weeks so I won't have new pictures until I go back to work....or catch big fish.

Here's that reminder.

So here are the numbers. April is with restrictions on viewing images, May is unrestricted.

April- 152 new members, 36,433 visits, 26,443 unique visitors

May- 137 new members, 35,427 visits, 25,568 unique visitors

Basically we had 3-4% less traffic in May than April but 10% more people registered in April (under image restriction) than in May.

It appears as though the image being turned off entices approximately 6-7% of the people to join more than when they get the cow for free.

Images are now turned off for June like they always were and I will repeat the process with opening them up in July. If the results are the same then i will keep them turned off for those not logged in and registered.

however people are finding this place, I'm guessing they are looking for information. Photos are good, but not essential. Joining/registering is still free, right? (Sorry, I've been in a coma since last fall).

Yes, free. The only ones that pay are those that want to and they are given more privileges than those with free accounts. Being a Sawhorse must have some value beyond the peace of mind that you are contributing financially to make the forum possible. I am always trying to find ways to give more value to the Sawhorses so that it entices more people to join.

that's fair.. there are advantages to upgrading on all sites.. and that's all it really is.. an upgrade. Thanks

I'll be done when my Photobucket account is full. As a matter of fact I should stop soon and save what storage space that I have left for things that I really want an answer for.

The problem with photos is that frequently, if you aren't the photographer, they become sort of meaningless.. for example, when I interviewed for my present position, one of the interviewers threw some pictures at me.. one of them was an overfilled electrical box.. well, ok, which violation are you looking for.. the over filled box, romex not secured properly, the lack of protection for the pipes below? Since I didn't know what exactly his "right" answer was, because I don't know why he took the photo, my answer could have been wrong.

Peach is correct in that sometimes pictures are an aid with great value. However, unless there is a question directed at the photo it becomes just what violation or problem are we to examine. I would say the answer she gave is correct, but again maybe just identifying the surface errors would raise more direct questions. Photo's always lead to more discussion, at least for me.
