Landlord (and Firefighter) Jailed for Door Failure

In a case in Wales, a landlord who is also a firefighter was just sentenced to 15 months in prison because he failed to install a fire door assembly that would have protected a family who died in a fire. There are several articles about it here: http://idighardware.com/2015/11/landlord-jailed-for-door-failure/

I've talked to quite a few firefighters and fire inspectors in the last year or two, and it initially surprised me that so many of them didn't know much about fire doors. In the Wales case, it appears there was an expectation that as a firefighter, the landlord should have known that the "woefully inadequate" door would not provide the necessary protection.

I've had good feedback on our 6-minute video on fire doors - maybe it will be useful to some of you: http://idighardware.com/2015/08/anatomy-of-a-fire-door-video/

Sorry why? Because he was guilty and lossed loved ones? What if he didn't know the victumes, does that excuse his failure to install/maintain code compliant doors.

Would you use the same doors between a garage and the house?

According to the article, the landlord was one of the first firemen to arrive at the fire. He took the task of entering the burning building and he brought dead children out of the burning building. I've got to think that carrying a dead child from a fire is something that will bother him forever. Knowing that the death of a family may have been prevented had he been a better landlord must be its own special torture. And don't miss the fact that he's not collecting rent anymore.

Just because he is a firefighter does not mean he knows anything about codes or fire prevention. There are many different jobs within a fire department and in larger departments some guys may do the same job for twenty years and never enter a burning building. I have a friend who son in south Florida drives the truck, pulls equipment as directed for fire fighters and provides EMS to victims on scene. He has not entered a burning building in probably a decade or more.

It is a sad when people die and hindsight says something more could have been done that MAY have prevented it. However the article indicate he received the jail time because he was fire fighter. Would he have received the same sentence if he was a door salesman?

All the firefighters in my area are volunteers. They are not inspectors. I don't think they know anything about code.

The same holds true for inspectors. I've seen it many times.

The shooter yesterday was apparently an Environmental Health Inspector, kind of shows how much he knew about health.

Public records show that a Syed Farook was employed by the San Bernardino County Health Department as an environmental health specialist, but it was not clear whether that was the same person involved in the shooting. The party was a gathering of employees of the health department.¹
My experience with Environmental Health Inspectors is that they inspect septic tanks and wells on projects as well as kitchen facilities when you build commercial restaurants etc.

The underlying causes of SB are on a slab at the corner' office. The why may only be surmised but Turner's in Pasadena had a 2 hour wait last night.

Why SB in the middle of nowhere? A wakeup call to be alert to your surroundings at all times.

The same day an architect was mugged of his phone by 5 kids in the front parking lot of Union Station in broad daylight.
