I am designing a new addition to an existing courthouse. The addition will consist of three floors all of which will connect to the existing 3 floors of the original courthouse via a 40' long connection corridor space on one side and a new stair for egress on the other side of the addition. The 1st and 2nd floors of the addition consist of offices while the 3rd floor is a second courtroom (and courtroom offices). I am using the 2009 IBC and was wondering if the connection corridor can be considered the level of exit discharge? I want to avoid having to install a sprinkler system on the 3rd floor of the addition for the 2nd courtroom. I am using 2-A construction, A-3 occupancy (most strict), non-separated construction.
