What are some methods to separate a new addition and existing construction if allowable areas are maxed out? Type II-B and we are looking at shaft wall (UL U415 System B). Structural engineer is concerned about using masonry/heavy construction next to the existing building and wants to keep the column line about 3' from existing construction. Regardless of that constraint, is this an appropriate use of shaft wall for a firewall given it is properly detailed?

Also we have a few areas where the existing building and a previous addition were not properly separated. On the newer side they ran 3-5/8" studs with 5/8" gwb-x about 2' from the face of the existing exterior wall. This may be a question for the field inspector but we were thinking we could add shaft liner to the existing furred wall, similar to UL system U505 or U529. Our AHJ has not adopted the IEBC.

Welcome

What year IBC to you want to use??

Your main problem is structural integrity

Will have to look up section reference

Our AHJ has not adopted the IEBC.

You can use the IEBC even if it is not adopted by the local AHJ

2012 IBC
3401.6 Alternative compliance.
Work performed in accordance with the International Existing Building Code shall be deemed to comply with the provisions of this chapter.

We just had a project that used a UL 263 assembly against an existing wall.
