I am being asked by welder who is ready to fabricate two cages on each side of a DJ booth what the limitations are for code compliance.
1) What is the minimum floor size?
My answer: 7 feet unless you install a working shower head. Then it can be 30 inches by 30 inches.
Reference: 2006 IBC 1208.2
2) What is the minimum ceiling height?
My answer: 7 feet.
3) What is the MAXIMUM space between bars if the platform is 36 inches above the floor?
My answer: 4 inches.
Reference: 2006 IBC 1013.3
4) Can I have a ladder access to these cages as well as the DJ booth?
My answer: Stair for the two go-go girl cages are mandatory but a ladder may be used for the DJ booth if there is only space enough for one person on the DJ platform. 42" high guard rail required.
5) Is a handrail required on both sides of the stair access?
My answer: You need a stair with 7/11 risers/tread and I can allow a hand rail on one side only. Stair needs to have a 36 x 36 landing adjacent to a side-hinged door that meets egress requirements.
Apparently the owner of this bar hired a welder to fabricate these and I am being told that they want to do something similar to what is currently being used at another local establishment. My guess is that this other establishment (I have never been there) put something in place without a building permit. The welder wants to do what's right and probably opened a can of worms between him and his client who did not want to obtain a building permit. No, I am not certain if these girls are fully clothed, partially clothed, totally naked, or sexy. Should not make any difference.
Merry Christmas and thanks for your responses.
