What can encroach into the turning space within the restroom when it is a multi-occupant bathroom? (ANSI A117.1 2003 applies)

1) Can the turning space encroach into the maneuvering space of any of the fixtures such as the lav or visa versa?

2) Can the door swing from the entry door encroach into the turning space within the restroom?

3) Can the door swing from the accessible toilet compartment encroach into the turning space?

Forgot to give my opinion:

1) Yes

2) Yes

3) Yes

However, door swing cannot encroach into the clear floor spaces of the fixture except a single compartment toilet room/rest room.

Thoughts & opinions?

Agree that reference says doors can encroach, but Section 603.2.2 says they cannot, unless it's for a single occupant.

Yes, 603.2.2

2) Can the door swing from the entry door encroach into the turning space within the restroom?

No, as the scenario specifies a multi-occupant bathroom. 603.2.3

3) Can the door swing from the accessible toilet compartment encroach into the turning space?
IMHO, yes, as I can't find anything under 604 that would supersede ("unless otherwise specified") 304.4

I don't read anything in 603.2.2 that discusses occupancy.

Or doors for that matter.

Alora - The 2009 A117.1, 603.2.2 addresses the door swing. Exception #2 is for individual use. In the 2003 A117.1 it's in 603.2.3, same exception #2.

The OP indicated 2003, so use 2003.

Either way, the OP question #2 had to do with the door encroaching into the turning space [304].

That's different than the clear floor space [305] to which you refer.

603.2.3:

603.2.3 Door Swing. Doors shall not swing into the clear floor space or clearance for any fixture.EXCEPTIONS:

1. Doors to a toilet and bathing room for a single occupant, accessed only through a private office and not for common use or public use shall be permitted to swing into the clear floor space, provided the swing of the door can be reversed to meet Section 603.2.3.

2. Where the room is for individual use and a clear floor space complying with Section 305.3 is provided within the room beyond the arc of the door swing.

I think you're getting "turning space" and "clear floor space" confused.
I don't think I am. The original question was, "What can encroach into the turning space within the restroom when it is a multi-occupant bathroom? (ANSI A117.1 2003 applies)" My answer referenced 304.4, "Unless otherwise specified, doors shall be permitted to swing into turning spaces."

There's your quote.

603.2.3 does not mention turning space.

Alora, yes, I see you are quite correct. The answer to all three original questions should be yes.

I also agree that all three questions should be answered yes, for turning space encroachment.

After Alora's explaination, I agree, all three should be yes. Thank you for that clarification Alora.
