NEC 445.18 – Disconnecting Means and Emergency Shutdown Requirements for Generators

Section 445.18 of the 2020 NEC lays out some pretty clear but layered requirements for generator disconnecting means and emergency shutdown. A few key takeaways:
  • All generators (other than cord-and-plug portable types) require a disconnecting means that opens all ungrounded conductors and can be locked open [445.18(A)].
  • Provisions must be in place to shut down the prime mover and disable start circuits [445.18(B)].
  • For units above 15 kW, a remote emergency stop switch is required outside the room or enclosure [445.18(C)].
  • One- and two-family dwellings now require an exterior emergency shutdown device [445.18(D)].
  • For parallel installations, isolation of generator output terminals is required [445.18(E)].
