The top technology officer for Los Angeles is pleading with city workers to stop watching the Olympics online at work, saying it could cause a municipal computer meltdown.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( http://lat.ms/OAuDVx) that city tech guru Randi Levin sent an email Tuesday asking workers to stop watching the London games because the city was experiencing a high volume of traffic.

City officials say watching Tuesday's women's gymnastics and soccer competitions live on the Internet causes a tremendous amount of bandwidth to be tied up.

That means city computers might be working at a snail's pace under the strain.

Councilman Dennis Zine says taxpayers aren't paying city workers to watch the Olympics on their computers or televisions.

Zine said he wanted to know where supervisors were during the viewings

"""""save it for the world series!!!!!""""

Nice....other than playing here a bit, (which is obviously work related... :) )I think I have only stopped for coffee in this town about 5 times in the last 2 years I've been here.....

I understand what he is trying to say, but I find it funny when council members posture with a double edged sword. I wonder if the council members or "taxpayers" ever asked the city workers to do something they weren't payed for. Like fatboy, we have limits on our streaming too.

When leaving work last night; I observed just about everyone with some sort of electronic gadget, but the city's IT manager was reading a paper bound text book!

I think what the IT manager was using is called an "Eye Book," and uses "Rich Text Formatting."

I always wondered what IT was doing since The Adams Family was canceled. Given that his manager is off reading books rather than minding IT's career, it is unsurpising that he hasn't shown up on Dancing with the Stars.
