In one of the previous codes not to long ago, I remember reading about an allowable interior stairwell between floors not enclosed as long as it was not part of the egress path and had a draft/smoke curtain and closely spaced sprinklers. I can't seem to find that in the 2021 version. Looks like it was removed. Are we not allowed to have a stairwell in a high end business use as a secondary means of going between floors any more? i can't seem to find where that would be allowed in the 2021 version. Tried AI to find it also, that was no help. LOL

I assume CT so I assume this?

1019.3

In other than Group I-2 and I-3 occupancies, floor openings containing exit access stairways or ramps that do not comply with one of the conditions listed in this section shall be enclosed with a shaft enclosure constructed in accordance with Section 713.

  1. 1.In buildings equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1 with other than Group H or I occupancies, exit access stairways and ramps serving an occupant load of less than 10 not more than one story above the level of exit discharge.

Thanks all, this helped me root out what I was looking for. 1019.3 exception 4 was what I was remembering from previous codes. i just spent 25 minutes looking and its always right in front of your face. LOL

Hydrax stipulated that the stair is not an egress path -- what we in the architecture game refer to as a "communicating stair." Since it is adequately addressed in chapter 7 (at least in Connecticut), there's no need to look at open exit access stairs in chapter 10.
