Proper Bonding of Existing Yellow CSST Gas Piping Systems
This e-alert is to inform UCC Code Administrators of potential problems with yellow corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) that may not be bonded to current code requirements.
Yellow CSST supplies natural gas or propane to furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces and other gas appliances in homes and buildings. The installation of yellow CSST began in the early 1990’s and was not required by code to be direct-bonded until the National Fuel Gas Code, NFPA-54, was updated in 2009 and adopted under the UCC effective December 31, 2009. Without proper direct-bonding, potential damage risks associated with lightning may exist.
We request that you inform homeowners and other building owners of potential problems if encountered during your inspection of new work in existing homes and buildings. The Department recognizes that yellow CSST may be observed in existing structures that are not subject to UCC enforcement activities. Therefore, this alert is for your information and voluntary action by the building owner.
There are approximately 400,000 homes in Pennsylvania in which yellow CSST is installed and may not be properly bonded to current code requirements. There is a greater possibility that yellow CSST is installed but not bonded to current code in homes and buildings built or renovated between the early 1990’s and 2007.
Please help educate Pennsylvania homeowners and other building owners on the importance of proper bonding of yellow CSST due to potential damage risks associated with lightning.
